Najee “Knowledge” Wilson was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 1, 1990. This is where he first realized his love for music and for words. Under the intense tutelage of hip hop greats like Jay-z, Eminem, and Nas he quickly realized that he too had the rare gift to paint pictures using words. Those around him also realized this as they encouraged him and under the watchful eye of his older brother he began to hone his skills writing and free styling every opportunity he had. Najee was strictly hip hop and had never really thought about poetry until one of his fellow rappers had read him an original poem. The unorthodox flow and rebellious structure of the free verse captured him. He struggled with trying to break out of the strict bar form of his raps and conform to the freedom of poetry. By the time he had reached college, he had mastered switching from rapper to poet flawlessly. He has performed countless times at numerous venues during his matriculation through college, and every performance brings him a certain satisfaction that only the sharing of his words could bring. He continues to strive and push the limits of his vocabulary as every year he grows wiser and has more to share. Keep listening
Pardon My Audacity caught up with Poet Najee “Knowledge” Wilson to ask him a few questions and to hear some dope poetry. Check out Najee in action:
Jas: What does poetry do for you?
NW: Poetry relaxes me. There is something about being able to paint vivid pictures using my words that soothes me. I always tell people that every poem I write was written for me first. That’s why poets tend to “share” our poetry instead of “giving” poetry.
Jas: What do you wish your words will do for listeners?
NW: I would like my words to take you away for your current state of mind and bring you to a level of consciousness that you never knew existed. I like when my listeners close there eyes and listen and travel with me where ever I lead them. It is the greatest compliment to a poet when we realize that our audience really feels us deep down and that they are honestly internalizing every word.
Jas: What inspires you to be a spoken word poet?
NW: What inspires me to be a poet is knowing that people actually NEED this and appreciate this. People will always be amazed at the fact that a poet was able to change their perspective completely, or broaden their scope on an issue that they thought they knew the most about. Most people think they have something down pack until they hear a poem that helps them realize that they were looking at the situation with tunnel vision or that their views were very one –
Jas: Tell the readers what you want your brand to be?
NW: My brand would be basically the word “knowledge”. It has become my favorite word. I always say “if you knew better you would do better” implying that knowledge is ladder to your ditch, the key to your locked doors, umbrella to rain. It is your solution. The more you begin to know is the more you realize that we as humans only know a very small fraction of all that there is to know. And coming to that humbling conclusion should push us to know more. And my job as a poet Is to spread what I know to be true.
