Aaliyah–Fashion Game Changer
As we are fast approaching the premier of Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, fans await the chance to get a look into the lives of one of the most influential artist of our time. She is more famous now than ever before. PMA admires the great talent of this beautiful singer that was gone far too soon. Let’s take a look at some of her most inspiring looks that will be the blueprint for years to come.
Back in the 90’s, fashion was baggy and very laid back. Aaliyah made everyone take notice when she wore bikini tops, crop tops, and baggy jeans with boxers. She wasn’t afraid to rock Timberlands or look like a Tomboy. Every year, a celebrity attempts to revive the memory of Aaliyah from Britney Spears to Ciara. Remember Britney’s “I’m A Slave For You” snake routine? Aaliyah had already coined this look in her video “I Need A Resolution”.
For years, female artists channeled her style but mainly her hair. Aaliyah’s mane was always laid and had so much body. Despite all of the changes in her career, her hair never went through any drastic changes. Most importantly, it always looked very healthy. I imagine even now she would have maintained her hair without outrageous color or cuts. What was most fascinating about Aaliyah’s style was the simplicity.
She gracefully transitioned into more feminine looks but it was within her sense of fashion. I adore the fact that she was pure with no cosmetic changes. In the land where your derierre rules, Aaliyah still wins because her originality. She played with makeup but not to the point where you couldn’t recognize her. She would have been the one to tell women to appreciate what they had. Everyone looks the same and if you don’t you are considered “basic”. If there is one lesson that we can learn from BabyGirl, it should be “Be Yourself”. The new artist Tinashe reminds me most of Aaliyah because she mimics her style but with a mind of her own. Be on the look out for the movie review article. The movie airs this Sat. on Lifetime. As always keep it fancy, fashion, and fun. Remember Aaliyah, the girl everyone wanted to be.
